Content Questions/内容についての質問:
1. What is role of a leader?
2. In a company, what employees are usually
considered leaders?
3. What three major tasks are the
responsibility of managers?

Passage/箇所

The distinction between a leader and a
manager is a very important one.

In a company, the senior managers must
behave like leaders.

They should look at what is going on in
their department and in the company overall
with a broad perspective.

Additionally, they should have a clear idea
what the competitive environment is like and
what the customers really want.

Based on this knowledge and their best guess
about what future trends will bring, senior
managers must set the strategic direction of
the company.

Once they have done this, the managers’
real work begins.

They take the strategy hammered out by
company leaders and design plans for
implementing the strategy.

Based on these plans, managers decide
what resources will be needed, what the
timetable for implementation will be,
and which employees will be responsible
for which tasks.

In short, leaders are the visionary
“thinkers” and managers the operational
“doers.”

To function optimally, a company needs
them both.
